
The
passenger coaches which were originally meant to be the personal railway
coaches of t he erstwhile rulers of princely states of Rajputana, Gujarat,
the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Viceroy of British India. These coaches were
not being used by the Indian Railways after independence in normal passenger
trains on account of very rich and traditional interiors.
The name "Palace-on-Wheels" (POW) was derived from its royal back-ground
of the coaches. A new air conditioned meter gauge Palace-on-Wheels Train
was introduced in 1990 with sharing toilets had 13 Saloons, 2 Restaurant
cum Kitchen car, one Bar cum Lounge and 4 Service Cars. In order to further
increase the amenities on the train and Due to conversion of tracks to broad
gauge in Rajasthan , the present 14 Passenger Saloon train was introduced
with A/C cabins attached toilets in 1995 & offers Royal comforts with
modern amenities personalised service.
In the mid 1980's there was limited tourist infrastructure in "Medieval Land Of Maharajas- Desert State of Rajasthan," ,with poor road conditions ; & what was the best alternate for elite international tourist,but to enjoy the comfort of overnight travel by " Maharaja Train" with personal butlers & pre-arranged guided tours. Over two decades of operations, the Palace On Wheels has been highly rated amongst the best train tours in the world.
Saloons:
The names of the saloons are based on the princely
states of Rajasthan -
Alwar,
Bharatpur,
Bikaner,
Bundi,
Dholpur,
Dungarpur,
Jaipur,
Jaisalmer,
Jhalawar,
Jodhpur,
Kishangarh,
Kota,
Sirohi,
and
Udaipur.
The decor of each saloon has highlighted the cultural ethos of the state,
represented through the use of furniture, handicrafts, paintings and furnishings.The
ceiling in the lounge is of particular interest. Each coupe is different
but the overall ambience of the decor of the saloons has been taken care
of to provide continuity.

Each saloon has cream yellow color on its exterior walls and bear the Coat
of Arms (logo) of the erstwhile princely states, along with the name.
Facilities On Board :
The present Broad Gauge Air-Conditioned Train with carpeted flooring & rich interiors was introduced in 1995-96 season & periodically undergoes renovation.Since it is weekly train tour & usually has very high occupancy ,detailed maintained & train overhaul work can only be carried from May to July,in which months the train tour does not operate.
The Palace On Wheels train last underwent major interior up-gradation In July 2010,when entire train upholstery was changed & Spa saloon car facility added'.
Overnight you travel in comforts of traditionally furnished air-conditioned sleeping chambers ( twin beds with bunker bed option) with attached private bathrooms having toiletries of International Standard & serviced round the clock by private butlers.There is a small lounge in each saloon of 4 passenger cabins,Your breakfast is usually serviced in this lounge.
You can also relax & un-wind in the Bar Lounge saloon with seating capacity of 30 persons.
There are two dining cars of 35 seater capacity each & food is freshly cooked and served from onboard kitchen.There is a "table-de-hote" menu with wide variety of both vegetarian & non vegetarian cuisine,but .Beef & Pork is not allowed to be served on-board the train.The Chef can always be contacted for special diet restrictions or request for children meals.
